RESIDENTIAL VEHICLES

***
Nineteen images from the series are currently being exhibited at Ucross Art Gallery in In Company, which runs May 30 - December 19, 2026, and which also features work by one of my main influences, seminal photographer Richard Misrach.

Residential Vehicles is an ongoing photographic series I began during the pandemic, walking my Echo Park neighborhood and then farther across Los Angeles, photographing RVs, vans, and sedans in which a growing number of my neighbors are living. I photograph the vehicles in profile — straight on, centered — as a visual taxonomy. Each image attends to a singular subject, but also to an ecosystem.

I do not photograph interiors, license plates, or the people inside in order to preserve the privacy of inhabitants. I did meet many people outside their vehicles. One thing stood out: a significant number of those living in vehicles were women, often with children. In contrast to the vulnerability of tents, a vehicle offers hard walls and a door that locks—however precarious that shelter may be.

One woman told me: “Just because it’s not a house doesn’t mean it’s not a home.

In partnership with
Safe Parking LA

All Residential Vehicles print sales are structured as a partnership with Safe Parking LA, a Los Angeles organization providing safe overnight parking, case management, and a path to housing for people living in their vehicles.

50% of net proceeds from sales of the main 35×17" edition and of the smaller 17.5 × 8.5" study edition go directly to Safe Parking LA. Net proceeds are calculated after direct production costs (paper, ink, packaging, shipping).
